House Dem taunts GOP: 'Look up Schoolhouse Rock and figure out how government works'

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) had some fun at the expense of his Republican colleagues on Tuesday when he mocked them for demanding that both the Joe Biden White House and the United States Senate accept every one of their demands on new immigration legislation.

While speaking on the House floor, McGovern pointed out to Republicans that they only controlled one-half of one branch of the federal government — and by a razor-thin majority.

"These are messaging bills that are going nowhere in the United States Senate," he said. "And I would say to my Republican friends — you might want to look up 'Schoolhouse Rock' and figure out how government works. We have a divided government right now. My Republican friends barely — barely! — control the House of Representatives. In fact, yesterday, there were more Democrats voting than Republicans!"

Because of this, he said, Republicans needed to learn to work in a bipartisan way to address problems, which he said that the Senate was actually doing at the moment on its border security package.

"This is not serious, what my Republican friends are doing," he charged. "Messaging bills that are going nowhere, and they vote against funding for stronger border security on a regular basis here in the House ... because Trump doesn't want it, all of a sudden, we don't need laws."
