Joe Arpaio says it's 'hard' to call John McCain a hero: 'You know who that person is? It's Donald Trump'

Former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is known for his anti-immigrant stances, this week refused to call deceased Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) a hero, and instead said that he had "found" his hero in President Donald Trump.

In an interview that was aired on Tuesday, MSNBC's Kasie Hunt asked Arpaio if he believed McCain was a "patriot."

Arpaio agreed.

Hunt pressed: "A hero?"

Arpaio paused for several seconds.

"That's hard for me to answer," the former sheriff said.

"Why?" Hunt wondered.

"Because I never had a hero in my life until several months ago," Arpaio explained. "I woke up and after 75 years, I found my hero. You know who that person is? Donald Trump."

Shortly after becoming president, Trump pardoned Arpaio after he was found guilty of violating a court order against profiling Latinos.
