An attorney for Joe Mitchell, a House candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump, did not dispute the authenticity of a raunchy leaked video of his profane racial remarks, instead accusing “political foes” of trying to “damage his campaign.”
The video surfaced Friday in a Daily Mail report. The woman who provided it said it was recorded in 2017, when Mitchell, now 29, was a 19-year-old student at Drake University. Mitchell is running as a Republican in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, backed by Trump and Turning Point Action.
The woman was friends with Mitchell in college but was not in the room when the video was recorded, the outlet reported. She told the Daily Mail she came forward because voters deserve “the full picture” of who they are electing.
The Cook Political Report rates Mitchell’s race against Democrat Lindsay James a toss-up. House Majority PAC, a group aligned with congressional Democrats, said in August that James led Mitchell 46 percent to 45 percent, according to the Daily Mail.
The 2017 video, which runs just under two minutes and contains several cuts, shows Mitchell in a bedroom with other young men the outlet described as his Black friends.
“I don’t like Black women!” Mitchell exclaimed at the start of the clip.
A man who knew Mitchell in college told the Daily Mail that Mitchell “did not want white children, he frequently lamented that,” and was known for saying he wanted to marry a black woman, something he says later in the video. The man said Mitchell also asked people in the room to “hook him up with black women.”
“He’s documenting me!” Mitchell said moments later, as a friend insisted he was “not documenting s—.”
“The fact that you want to f— a black girl?” another friend asked. “Because I can get you a black girl.”
“I only want to f— [her],” Mitchell replied, naming a black woman he had a crush on at the time, according to the report.
“I wanna marry one!” Mitchell said of black women later in the video, after a cut.
“Why are you talking about marriage right now, dawg?” a friend responded. “… You’re 19 years old, dude.”
“I want my kids to not be white,” Mitchell bellowed. “Okay?”
“Because I don’t like f— white people!” he continued when the friend asked why. “Okay? Why do you think I’m f— hanging out with people that aren’t white?”
“They listen to their dads, they get f— yacht rides from them,” Mitchell went on, in a partly inaudible passage the Daily Mail described as remarks about white women, whom he called “selfish” and “spoiled f— brats.”
“I have a big d—!” Mitchell yelled later in the video, as the men argued over whose reproductive organ was largest.
“Joe, I’m at seven and a half inches,” one friend said.
“I’m eight!” Mitchell replied. “I’m eight!”
“No, you’re not, Joe,” the friend said.
“You guys have a different skin color than me,” Mitchell said. “So you guys think you have f— bigger d—. My d—‘s bigger than all your guys’.”
“Nobody with an eight-inch c— would be crying right now,” another friend shot back.
“Racist!” the same friend yelled, as the other shouted for someone to “get him out of here.”
“That’s f— racist,” Mitchell yelled, falling out of his chair. “You guys are the racist ones!”
“Get out of here, Joe!” a friend shouted as the clip ended with Mitchell stubbornly kneeling and bending to touch his head to the floor.
In Snapchat screenshots shared with the Daily Mail, Mitchell boasted about racking up “2 alcohol violations in a week,” and in another post wrote that he was “taking lots of xanx tonight,” adding, “and no one will stop me.”
In a statement to the Daily Mail, Mitchell didn’t deny the video’s authenticity.
“My entire generation has had a camera in their face since we were born,” he said. “I was 19, in college, and I have grown up.”
“Since graduating college, I found some better friends …,” he added.
Eric Branstad, a longtime Republican operative in Iowa and son of former Gov. Terry Branstad, told the Daily Mail that “people sending this kind of stuff are jealous of success, and of how hard he works.”
“Joe is as clean as they come, as far as any drugs or alcohol or partying. We were all in college once, and I’m sure we had some good and bad nights,” Branstad added.
Andrew Turner, a former Iowa Democratic operative, told the Daily Mail that Mitchell’s former friends “want to see him fail and are pushing this garbage.”
The woman who leaked the video to the Daily Mail argued that Mitchell shouldn’t get a pass.
“We are all drunk and young once, but that doesn’t make us any less accountable for our words,” she said.
