Ex-Trump aide mocks ‘rich’ irony of John Bolton raid

A former deputy press secretary in Donald Trump's first administration questioned why her former boss cares so much about classified information.

Speaking to MSNBC on Friday, Sarah Matthews noted that the raid on the home of former national security advisor John Bolton is purportedly related to national security issues.

"Obviously, we don't know the merit of this case so far," Matthews prefaced. "They got the search warrant. So, clearly, they have some sort of evidence, but I don't want to speculate on what that could be. And I think, though, it is really rich that they're coming after him for allegedly keeping classified material, when in fact, if they cared so much about that, why was it okay then, for the current president to keep classified material, top secret documents in his bathroom at Mar-a-Lago?"

Trump was asked for over a year to return documents, including classified information, that would be sent to the National Archives according to the Presidential Records Act. After multiple requests to return the documents, the matter was turned over to the FBI. The FBI then executed a search warrant, also granted by a judge, and took possession of the documents.

"We saw the boxes and boxes of it," Matthews recalled of the Trump documents. "This is also the same administration that was critical of the Biden administration for allegedly weaponizing government to go after their enemies, but it appears that they're doing the exact same thing now."

Bolton's book was ultimately cleared for publication. It heavily criticized Trump's behavior while president. In the years since, Bolton has continued to bash Trump on television.

Matthews recalled that she warned all of this would transpire if Trump were elected.

"And, so, this is something that in the months leading up to the 2024 election, I warned repeatedly against — and I was sounding the alarm — and I think people thought I sounded like an alarmist — that I said that this would be a retribution presidency, that he would go after his perceived enemies and that would be his focus," said Matthews. "His focus would not be bettering the lives of everyday Americans. It would be getting retribution. And now we're seeing that play out."
