John Brennan plays coy on whether the FBI was monitoring the Trump Tower meeting in real time

Former CIA director John Brennan played coy when MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace asked whether the intelligence community knew what was said during the infamous Trump Tower meeting.

"Did the American intelligence community have real-time knowledge that agents of the Kremlin, like Natalia [Veselnitskaya], were meeting with representatives of the Trump campaign, including the president's son and son-in-law and his campaign chairman?" she asked.

Brennan, who has a history of working for both Republican and Democratic administrations, explained it's certainly possible for intelligence agencies to do it.

"I'm not going to tell you what law enforcement capabilities were at that time, and still may be in terms of monitoring these developments," Brennan said. "But the FBI and the U.S. Intelligence community are the world's best in terms of being able to detect and to then uncover. Sometimes in real-time, but often you're able to determine exactly what happened by putting together some bits and pieces of data until you can see more of the puzzle."

President Donald Trump alleged that he was wiretapped at Trump Tower, though there has been no proof to substantiate it. Paul Manafort was being monitored during the campaign.
