Jon Stewart blasts Republicans and rich anti-vaccine liberals: 'There's just a needlessly sick America'

Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked both sides of the unexpectedly bipartisan opposition to measles vaccines on Tuesday.

"Vaccine ignorance seems to have created some strange hospital bedfellows, uniting the fringe of left and right," Stewart said. "It makes me realize, there's no 'Red America,' there's no 'Blue America.' There's just a needlessly sick America."

Stewart argued that, once President Barack Obama advised Americans to vaccinate their own children, that some conservatives would oppose the idea out of spite. But instead of backing medical science, prospective GOP presidential contenders like Sen. Rand "Dr. Paul, Anecdote Man" Paul (R-KY) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) chose to argue that parents should be able to opt out of vaccinations.

In Christie's case, Stewart pointed out, his remarks came months after he quarantined nurse Kaci Hickox despite her testing negative for the Ebola virus.

"It's nice that, unlike pigs in gestational crates in New Jersey, the governor has enough room to turn his stance around to change things," Stewart said.

Stewart also showed footage of a Northern California woman who also argued that parents in her affluent neighborhood were reasonable in not wanting their children to be vaccinated.

"They're not rednecks. They're not ignorant. They practice a mindful stupidity," he said. "If we want to get rid of measles, they'll just steam them out of their vaginas."

To better explain the situation, Stewart compared the threat of a measles outbreak to a zombie apocalypse, using footage from George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead as a backdrop. He argued that, in that scenario, vaccines serve as the metaphorical wooden barrier keeping the disease out of the house, with everyone tasked to do their part in keeping the barricade up.

"You trust everybody's gonna do their job. And then you wake up, and it's two in the morning, and there's a f*cking zombie gnawing on your brain, and you're like, 'What the f*ck? Who didn't board up their window?' And that's when some lady from Marin County who you let into your farmhouse goes, 'Oh, I read an article on a wellness forum that says we shouldn't sleep in boarded up rooms 'cause it f*cks you all up.'"
