Jon Stewart: Trump’s not Republican -- but GOP will 'reap the benefit’ when he breaks the government

On Thursday, Jon Stewart said that as difficult as the election results may be for some people to accept, we should remember that we're still the same country that elected Pres. Barack Obama.

"I don't believe that we're a fundamentally different country today that we were two weeks ago," he said on CBS This Morning. "The same country, with all its grace and flaws and volatility and insecurity and strength and resilience exists today as existed two weeks ago."

"The same country that elected Donald Trump elected Barack Obama," Stewart told anchor Charlie Rose. "I feel badly for the people for whom this election will mean more uncertainty and insecurity, but I also feel like this fight has never been easy."

He went on to say that Trump is not a Republican, but Republicans will reap the benefits of the havoc he wreaks in the federal government.

The "cynical strategy" of Republicans, Stewart said, is to say that government doesn't work, then to break and obstruct the government so that it doesn't actually work. Then they can privatize the "broken" institutions they themselves broke.

"Donald Trump is a repudiation not just of Democrats, but of Republicans," Stewart said. "He's not a Republican. He's a repudiation of Republicans, but they will reap the benefit of his victory -- in all of their cynicism."
