A conservative journalist bashed Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) for assuming that Americans were willing to make sacrifices for President Donald Trump's war on Iran.
The Iowa Republican expressed her support for Operation Epic Fury and suggested that other Americans understood the necessity of sending U.S. troops into harm's way to protect national security, but panelists on "CNN This Morning" were highly skeptical.
"The question of arewe safer now, are we safer forhaving done this, and I thinkthe more existential question ofhow on earth did we possibly dothis again?" said podcast host Noel King.
Host Audie Cornish wondered how much Americans would be willing to sacrifice for something they didn't ask for, and The Dispatch's Michael Warren said the Trump administration had never made a case for the war in the first place.
"Joni Ernst, thesenator from Iowa, said the American people understand this," Warren said. "But I just don't think – that'sassuming facts not in evidence. There was no argument madebeforehand about why now. We'vebeen saying this now for twoweeks."
"And no opportunity for publicdebate," Cornish interjected.
"That's right," Warren agreed, "and that's ahuge difference from pastengagements. You know, everyonetalks about the comparison withthe Iraq war. There's a lot ofdebate and discussion aboutthat before Congress voted toauthorize it. None of that hashappened in the run-up here, andI think even if you support theidea of of decapitating theregime, you have to wonder whynow?"
