Joy Reid shreds Trump's 'racist, fear-mongering' ad claiming Democrats will be 'complicit in murders'

MSNBC host Joy Reid tore into the Trump's administration's bigotry after officials in the administration released an ad she compared to the notorious Willy Horton ad used to attack former Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis in 1988.

The AM Joy host first shared a clip of the Horton ad "deployed by George H.W. Bush to attack Michael Dukakis' record on crime, helped to sink his candidacy with an appeal to the racial fears of white voters," before turning to the Trump campaign ad that stated Democrats would be be "complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants," because they won't fund his wall as part of a budget deal.

"You have Republicans who are literally going right back to the playbook of brown scare -- it was black scare," host Reid said before asking GOP consultant Evan Siegfried, "Is it wise, in your opinion as a millennial republican strategist, for Republicans to run on brown people are rapists, murderers and killers and, therefore, do not belong in America?"

"After Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) was shot in June, you and I had a heated debate about what is acceptable in tone," Siegfried replied. "I said it's really wrong for anybody to say one side wants to kill other people or is responsible for that. The same applies here."

"That ad is disgusting. It's racist, it's fear mongering and it's a giant dog whistle," he continued. "We'll pay in the long term because the country is becoming more and more diverse. At the same time the president talks about how important illegal immigration and confronting it is. He isn't confronting it."

"Republicans used anti-blackness, fear of black men in order to take deeply ingrained hidden phobias inside of white voters that they may not have been comfortable voicing out loud," Reid replied. "[GOP consultant] Lee Atwater said, 'first you say N-word, N-word, N-word, but then you say we won't lower taxes' and what you're really doing is race -- race talk."

Republican consultant Shermichael Singleton added that he was also repulsed by the ad.

"This isn't a new phenomenon. you mentioned the George H.W. Bush campaign. what it shows is that the Republican Party, at least under President Trump, is out of touch with the change in demographics of the country," he stated.
