Republican Senator clashes with MSNBC host after she fact-checks him to his face

Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) clashed with MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell Thursday when she began fact-checking allegations about Democrats weaponizing the Justice Department.

While Hagerty wouldn't say whether or not he thought former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was a good choice for attorney general, he said he "can understand" why President-elect Donald Trump would look to someone like Gaetz to run the Justice Department.

"It is amazing to me that people are reacting the way they are, what you just showed — because there has been no one better at channeling the American public's frustration with weaponization through the Department of Justice than Matt Gaetz, you can understand the president's frustration with the DOJ, during his campaign," said Hagerty.

A majority of Americans told pollsters a few weeks before the election that it would be “wrong” for Trump to demand the DOJ drop the federal charges against him, a USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll showed.

Hagerty continued, citing conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton's "fake dossier to spy on him," and the "fake Russia investigation." He also mentioned the classified documents theft case that was thrown out by Judge Aileen Cannon.

"But a Trump-appointed judge cut that off, and it wasn't fully vetted, so let's just talk about that was the legal system at work, no question," said Mitchell.

And she added, "I don't want to litigate what happened with Donald Trump because there is a lot of evidence to support the indictments."

Hagerty said that the American people voting for Trump showed their opinions on the weaponization of government.

Mitchell brought up allegations of sexual misconduct against Gaetz that prompted a House ethics enquiry that hadn't been completed when he resigned Wednesday.

Hagerty said he was shocked that Mitchell was more worried about Gaetz's sex scandals than the weaponization of the DOJ.
