Justice Department gives Trump buddy Sheldon Adelson a big present — despite government shutdown

Billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson continues to benefit from the presidency of his close friend Donald Trump.

Adelson reportedly received a $700 million windfall from the Republican tax cuts Trump signed into law. He then contributed over $112 million to help the GOP in the 2018 midterm elections.

Trump reportedly personally lobbied Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to approve an Adelson casino project.

And Trump awarded the 2018 Presidential Medal of Freedom to Miriam Adelson, the casino magnate's wife.

On the 24th day of Trump's government shutdown, it appears Adelson may have once again benefited from his friend's administration.

"The Justice Department late Monday issued a legal opinion that could further restrict online gambling even as some states have been moving to embrace it — a restriction long sought by GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson, who controls one of the world’s largest casino empires," The Washington Postreported Monday.

The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel issued the opinion.

Buzzfeed legal editor Chris Geidner was fascinated by the treatment Adelson received.

"DOJ is asking courts across the country to halt lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of the administration’s actions due to the shutdown, but it managed to find time and resources to get done something that Sheldon Adelson wants," Geidner tweeted.
