WATCH: Trump-loving GOP Senate hopeful spends five minutes refusing to say whether Biden won
Days after launching his campaign, Arizona GOP Senate candidate Justin Olson was repeatedly asked a simple question during an appearance on a local political talkshow: Did Joe Biden win the 2020 presidential election?
But Olson, who until recently served as chief financial officer for the pro-Trump student group Turning Point USA, refused to give a yes-or-no answer.
Dennis Welch, host of 3TV/CBS5's Politics Unplugged, asked Olson the question no fewer than three times.
After Olson failed to answer twice, Welch interrupted him and said: "We are almost out of time. I didn't hear an answer to that. You don't want to say who won the election. I want to know, how come you're uncomfortable saying yes or no whether Biden was the legitimate winner?"
"I think that that's a great question. I think I answered the question," Olson responded, even though he hadn't. "Certainly, it's clear that Biden is in the White House right now, but when we have these razor-thin margins, and there are votes that are determined on a judgment call whether to be included in the count or not, that's what causes folks to not have that confidence in the outcome, so we can put in place reforms, that make it easy for folks to vote, and hard for folks to cheat, so that all voters can be confident in the outcome of the election."
The Arizona Republic's Laurie Roberts notes that Olson spent some 500 words — and nearly five minutes — playing "twinkle toes."
According to Roberts, Olson's answer — or lack thereof — shows he's "armed with the essential qualification for any GOP candidate in 2022."
"Olson's not the only guy in the race wearing tap shoes," Roberts writes. "By my count, of the five Republican candidates in the race, only Mick McGuire, the retired adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard, has actually acknowledged that Joe Biden was the 'duly elected' president. That likely puts him out of the running for that all-important Trump endorsement and thus out of the running, period."
According to Roberts, Olson is "the likely frontrunner for Trump's endorsement." The winner of the GOP primary will face Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in the November 2022 general election.
