Thunderous applause as Harris pauses speech to address protests — and call for ceasefire

Supporters erupted in applause at an Arizona rally for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who paused her remarks Friday evening to address protesters — and call for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

Shortly after her speech began, Harris interrupted her speech and held up a hand as she looked to her right.

"You know what. Hold on a second. Hold on a second," she repeated as the crowd booed the heckling. "Here's the thing. We are all in here together. I'm told an extraordinary number of folks who are here together because we love our country."

Harris continued, "We are here to fight for our democracy," as the crowd erupted, "which includes respecting the voices that I think that we are hearing from."

She added: "Let me just say this. On the topic of what I think I'm hearing over there. Let me just speak to that for a moment and then I'm going to get back to the business at hand."

Harris received thunderous applause as she declared: "Let me say, I have been clear: now is the time to get a ceasefire deal and get the hostage deal done. Now is the time. And the president and I are working around the clock every day to get that ceasefire deal done and get those hostages home."

Harris said she "respects" the protesters voices, then received more applause as she deftly returned to her speech.

"We are here to now talk about this race in 2024," she said.
