Kansas man shot in buttocks by stray bullet fired by target shooter half mile away

A Kansas man was shot in the rear end Sunday by a stray bullet fired from a half mile away.

The man, whose name was not released, was wounded about 2 p.m. while walking with his son in the back yard of his family’s home near Wichita, reported WIBW-TV.

Police said five men ages 18-20 had been target shooting at a dead stump with no backstop on a nearby farm.

"When you're shooting rifles that are made for long distance shooting you definitely need to know what's behind your target when you shoot," said Sgt. Kevin Berry, of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The man is expected to recover from his injuries, and his sister-in-law said stray bullets fired from elsewhere had previously damaged sheds and vehicles on his property.

Deputies said the target shooters had cooperated with the investigation, but they could face possible aggravated battery charges.
