Kari Lake scrambles to condemn Arizona abortion ban despite backing Trump on issue

Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake (R) has quickly made clear she opposes a court decision to effectively ban abortion in the state — even though she also supports Donald Trump's position that states should decide the issue.

Lake made the remarks Tuesday after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that the state must follow a 123-year-old law that bans nearly all abortions, except when necessary to save the life of the pregnant person.

"I speak to more Arizonans than anyone and it is abundantly clear that the pre-statehood law is out of step with Arizonans," Lake said in a statement.

The candidate insisted she agreed with Trump's stance on states deciding abortion laws.

"I am the only woman and mother in this race," the statement noted. "I understand the fear and anxiety of pregnancy, and the joy of motherhood."

"I wholeheartedly agree with President Trump — this is a very personal issue that should be determined by each individual state and her people," she added. "I oppose today's ruling, and I am calling on Katie Hobbs and the State Legislature to come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support. Ultimately, Arizona voters will make the decision on the ballot come November."

Lake also vowed not to enshrine abortion rights at the federal level if she is successful in defeating Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) in the Arizona Senate race.

"I am not going to D.C. to legislate an issue that has been returned to the states. I am going to D.C. to secure our border, strengthen our families and help President Trump Make America Great Again," she concluded.

On Monday, Trump released his formal position on abortion law in the U.S., declining to support a federal law.

“Many states will be different," he said. "Many will have a different number of weeks or some will have more conservative than others and that’s what they will be."

“At the end of the day it’s all about will of the people.”
