Donald Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway appeared on Good Morning America with George Stephanopoulos on Friday morning. The two discussed a Trump tweet from Nov. 27 in which the president-elect alleged that he won the popular vote, "if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally."
Stephanopoulos said, "That claim is groundless. Isn’t it irresponsible for the president-elect to make false statements like that?" Trump has consistently been a proponent of voter fraud conspiracy theories.
Conway attempted to change the tune of the conversation, starting on a rant about fake news to avoid answering the question. "I think it's groundless to talk about fake news, the fake news is that somehow the popular vote is more important than the Electoral College vote now."
She continued, "All I saw [on news networks] was 'Road to 270,' I've never heard 'Road to popular vote."
Stephanopoulos shot back, "Kellyanne, that’s not what I asked. No one is questioning the victory. I said, is it appropriate, is it responsible for the president-elect to make false statements like that."
"Well first, many people are questioning the victory," Conway deflected again. "You've got people spending millions of dollars — wasting money and time — in the Clinton and Stein camps." She added, "So, not everyone has 'accepted the election results.'"
She added that Trump had been discussing with "different people" about "voting irregularities or the number of illegal votes that may have been cast, and I believe that he based his information on that."
"There's not evidence that there were millions of illegal votes," Stephanopoulos reminded her. "Zero."
Conway responded again with a statement that does not address Trump's claims. "There's also no evidence that a recount is going to change the results in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania," she said.
After going on another tangent about how people are not accepting the election results and claiming that the Trump campaign has consistently been asked about its victory, Stephanopoulos said, "Simple question, Kellyanne. Is that statement by President-elect Trump true?"
