Trump lawyer who masterminded 2020 coup plot suspended from law practice in DC: report

Kenneth Chesebro, a pro-Trump lawyer who helped draft the 2020 plot to overturn the GOP's election loss, has been suspended from practicing law in Washington, D.C., on the grounds that he has been convicted of a serious crime.

The order, issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, was first reported by Politico's Kyle Cheney on Wednesday evening.

"ORDERED, on the court's own motion, that Kenneth John Chesebro be suspended from the practice of law before this court," said the missive. "FURTHER ORDERED, on the court's own motion, that this matter be referred to the court's Committee on Admissions and Grievances for a recommendation to the court on the extent of the final discipline to be imposed as a result of the conduct resulting in the conviction."

This marks the latest of multiple states and jurisdictions in which Chesebro has been suspended or disbarred. He also had his privilege to practice in New York revoked earlier this year.

Chesebro was the architect of an infamous memo that detailed how to create teams of fake electors for Trump who would claim to be the actual electors of states where former President Joe Biden had won. Another far-right legal strategist, John Eastman, separately outlined how these electors could then be used as a pretext for then-Vice President Mike Pence to disqualify the real electors, throwing the presidency to a vote in the House where Trump would have had a majority of state delegations.

Pence ultimately did not move forward with this plan, believing it to be unconstitutional, and many of those fake elector slates ended up being prosecuted, although some of those charges were later dropped.

For his own role, Chesebro would later plead guilty in the Georgia election racketeering case brought against himself, Trump, and a number of other alleged co-conspirators by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The charges against Trump have effectively been derailed after Georgia courts disqualified Willis from prosecuting the case on ethics grounds.
