McCarthy in 'immediate danger' of being ousted as Dems show no willingness to save him

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) tenure as leader of the House of Representatives appears to be on very thin ice.

Punchbowl News reports that McCarthy is in "immediate danger" of being ousted by his own party after rebellious Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate the chair.

Even though McCarthy had a call on Monday with House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), it seems that Jeffries' caucus appears to have no willingness to bail McCarthy out, which means that the California Republican can only lose five members of his own caucus to avoid being given the boot.

The report goes on to detail just how dire the situation for McCarthy really is.

"McCarthy has two days — today and tomorrow — to schedule a vote on Gaetz’s resolution," writes Punchbowl News. "That vote could come up as early as noon today. McCarthy is stuck. He probably can’t win with Republican votes alone. Democrats don’t trust him and are less than eager to waltz into the middle of a Republican civil war in order to prop McCarthy up."

At this point it is unclear who would replace McCarthy as House Speaker, although Gaetz earlier this year made a push for former President Donald Trump, who has since been indicted in four jurisdictions on 91 felony counts.
