Kevin McCarthy faces primary challenge from Trump-loving MAGA Republican

As if losing his speakership weren't bad enough, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) now faces the prospect of being booted out of Congress all together.

Politico reports that Trump-loving MAGA Republican David Giglio is launching a primary challenge against McCarthy, all while heaping praise on the rebellious eight Republicans who voted to remove the Californian Rep. as speaker.

“Kevin McCarthy was removed as Speaker by 8 courageous members of his own party for failing to keep his promises and capitulating to Joe Biden and the radical Democrats,” Giglio said in a press release announcing his candidacy. “Kevin McCarthy must be defeated.”

Politico reports that Giglio is a political outsider who, "Has a business selling sports cards and memorabilia online," although he did previously run for Congress in California's 13th congressional district, a race he lost to Rep. John Durate (R-CA).

McCarthy has been hit with nonstop political challenges ever since Republicans won a narrow majority in the House of Representatives during last year's midterm elections.

He required 15 attempts before he finally ascended to the speakership, but he worked for months under constant threat from right-wing hardliners to file a motion to vacate the chair, which finally happened earlier this month and resulted in a three-week struggle for Republicans to settle on a replacement.
