U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle lavished praise on President Donald Trump after his White House asked her to resign.
Guilfoyle’s praise came in a lengthy statement she posted on X Tuesday, the same day White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced the request at her debut briefing. The move came amid scrutiny of Guilfoyle’s conduct before and after she became ambassador, CNBC reported.
“Serving as the United States Ambassador to Greece has been the honor of a lifetime. I will forever be grateful to President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for entrusting me with the extraordinary privilege of representing the greatest country in the history of the world,” Guilfoyle wrote.
“These accomplishments are a testament to President Trump’s bold leadership, Secretary Rubio’s commitment to American diplomacy, and the extraordinary men and women who serve our country every day,” she wrote, crediting Trump for her embassy’s work on energy and defense.
“My gratitude and respect for President Trump and Secretary Rubio remain unwavering,” she added.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Zacharia said at the briefing. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”
“We’re looking at it,” Trump told reporters a day earlier when asked about removing her. “We’re not happy.”
The demand followed a Wall Street Journal report last week that Guilfoyle pressed Trump donor Eric Deters to pay her $100,000 American Express bill in July 2025, days before her Senate confirmation hearing, and offered to help him reach senior administration officials.
“It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” Guilfoyle wrote in a Signal message, according to the Journal.
“Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” she wrote in another message, the Journal reported.
Deters never made the payment, telling Guilfoyle it could cost him his marriage, the Journal reported. Guilfoyle’s lawyer, Jesse Binnall, told the newspaper she disputes the messages’ authenticity but declined to provide specifics. Her lawyers have since said the money she sought was owed to her for speaking appearances that predated her nomination.
Deters told CBS News he has “no doubt it was pay to play.”
The State Department’s internal watchdog, the Office of Inspector General, is also investigating Guilfoyle and the U.S. Embassy in Greece, NBC News reported.
“I also want to address the recent allegations against me. These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity,” Guilfoyle wrote in her statement.
“I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service,” she declared.
Guilfoyle’s statement did not directly address the resignation request.
“While my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end,” she wrote.
“I will always be a loyal supporter of President Trump and his mission to Make America Great Again,” Guilfoyle added.
It was not clear whether Guilfoyle had formally submitted her resignation, and the White House referred questions to Zacharia’s briefing remarks, Fox News Digital reported.
