Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) took a sharp, thinly veiled jab at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday, issuing a tongue-in-cheek advisory ahead of her scheduled visit to his state.
Noem is set to hold a news conference in Springfield on Wednesday to discuss Illinois’s sanctuary policies, according to local media reports. But before the MAGA Republican stepped foot in the state, Pritzker’s office came out with a warning dripping with snark.
“We would urge all pet owners in the region to make sure all of your beloved animals are under watchful protection while the Secretary is in the region,” the Democratic governor’s office wrote in an email to reporters, according to Chicago Sun-Times chief political reporter Tina Sfondeles.
The dig was a not-so-subtle reference to Noem’s admission last year to killing her family dog for misbehavior.
“I hated that dog,” Noem wrote in her memoir in a widely criticized passage.

But Pritzker’s office wasn’t done poking fun at Noem. The email to reporters on Tuesday also mocked the DHS secretary’s style.
“Secretary Noem has often been spotted on television cosplaying law enforcement officers, so media are invited to capture her latest costume upon arrival," according to the email, which also invites the media to "cover this reality television style of governance."
Noem’s visit to Illinois comes as the Trump administration accused the state in a new lawsuit this week of unlawfully discouraging businesses from using E-Verify, the federal system designed to screen out non-citizens who are not authorized to work in the United States.
