Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MA) argued Elon Musk was a liar after the billionaire face of DOGE called Social Security a "Ponzi scheme."
During a Tuesday House Oversight subcommittee hearing, Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) said it was difficult to take the effort to cut waste, fraud, and abuse seriously when Republicans would not push back against Musk's misstatements.
"When I see the people leading the effort, like Elon Musk, call something like Social Security a Ponzi scheme, and I hear crickets on the other side of the aisle, I have a really hard time taking any of this seriously," the Florida Democrat explained.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) pushed the committee's witnesses to admit Musk was wrong.
"The answer is no, right?" Moskowitz asked. "It's not a Ponzi scheme... You can say it. It's not a Ponzi scheme. I'll say it for you. It's not a Ponzi scheme. It's not a Ponzi scheme."

"I know we're afraid to say it. And see, that's part of the problem. We're afraid to say that Elon Musk is wrong," he added. "We hear crickets from the witnesses. Because everyone is afraid when Elon says something, if it's patently false, we're afraid to say it's false."
Mfume piled on Musk.
"I will say Elon Musk is a liar, on the record, which I've said many times," the ranking member opined. "So I guess he's coming after me."
