Larry Wilmore slams America's insane 'see something, shoot something' gun culture

Larry Wilmore examined America's "see something, shoot something" culture of gun-toting would-be good Samaritans.

He looked first at the case of a Michigan woman who opened fire on a pair of fleeing shoplifters, which earned her 18 months on probation and the loss of her concealed carry permit.

"I have to admit, though, part of me admires someone who, you know, is taking it on herself to stop crime," Wilmore said. "But the part of me that houses my brain thinks that this woman is crazy."

The woman complained after her sentencing that she had only been trying to help, and she sniffed that she would never help anyone again after her prosecution.

"What is it with her attitude?" Wilmore wondered. "Hmph, I'm just going to take my bullets and go home. It's a like a bad cop who says, 'You don't want me to shoot unarmed black people? Fine, I won't do my job, then.'"

Next he looked at a group of California churchgoers who were taking firearms classes -- which one of them said made them "safe and saved."

"A pistol, apostle," Wilmore said. "Tomato, tomat-oh. Packing heat, and packing homilies. What could go wrong?"

He pointed to the story of a pastor from another California church who was accidentally shot by his firearms instructor while taking gun safety classes.

"This is how far the gun culture has gone," Wilmore marveled. "It's got to be in church now? You know it's a good day if Jesus didn't have to use his AK. Matthew 27. Oh wait, my bad. Ice Cube 92."

The gun-toting churchgoers say they picked up their weapons over fears of recent mass shootings -- specifically the massacre of nine worshipers at a South Carolina church.

"The shootings in South Carolina didn't happen because they were churchgoers -- they happened because they were black," Wilmore said. "Instead of gun training, may I suggest some don't accidentally become black training?"
