Las Vegas cops knock down rumors about mysterious paper in gunman’s hotel room

Police are still investigating a mysterious slip of paper spotted in photos released of the Las Vegas gunman's room -- but they knocked down rumors that it was a suicide note.

The piece of paper left on a table inside Stephen Paddock's suite at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino had numbers written on it, police told the New York Times.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told the newspaper that investigators were still trying to determine what the numbers meant, but he made clear the paper was not a suicide note.

After photos were published of Paddock's suite, conspiracy theorists seized upon a written letter seen in the pictures that many speculated was a suicide note.

Some of those theories were based on speculation that the gunman had revealed his motive but law enforcement had purposely concealed that information.

The FBI is still trying to determine why Paddock opened fire Sunday night on a country music festival, killing 36 women and 22 men.

Investigators have not found a manifesto or any evidence that the gunman held extremist political views.
