Law professor explains chilling precedent of new Trump immigration plan: 'Redefining citizenship is a sign of illness'

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he wanted to issue an executive order ending the longstanding American tradition of birthright citizenship -- despite the fact that the 14th Amendment explicitly states that "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States."

Eric Muller, a law professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law, has written a highly personal Facebook post explaining why Trump's new proposal is so dangerous -- even if it has zero chance of actually being upheld by the courts.

In the post, Muller shows a photo of himself holding a German passport and then explains the chilling reason he was granted German citizenship despite being born in the United States: Namely, that his Jewish father was unjustly stripped of his German citizenship under laws passed by the Nazis in the 1930s.

"I have German citizenship because Germany stripped my father of his German citizenship in 1935 under the Nuremberg Laws (and the country later, in shame, restored it)," writes Muller, who himself is Jewish. "Redefining the boundaries of citizenship is a sign of illness."
