Lindsey Halligan, who left the Justice Department in January after a court ruled that her appointment as U.S. Attorney in Virginia was unlawful, attended an exclusive “MAGA elite” party on Saturday, July 4, during which she was overheard dropping a “bombshell” claim that raised major questions as to the future of the DOJ, the Daily Mail reported.
Held at the Executive Branch, a private club in Washington, D.C., the Independence Day celebration saw a number of high-ranking Trump administration officials attend the star-studded event, which included performances from rapper 50 Cent. Among them was Halligan, the controversial Trump appointee who critics say was chosen for her willingness to bring criminal charges against the president’s perceived enemies.
Attending the event with her boyfriend, who the Daily Mail did not name, Halligan was reportedly overheard making a shocking claim about President Donald Trump’s future plans.
“Floating just outside the VIP section with her boyfriend – who told the Daily Mail he works in 'tech' – Halligan was overheard dropping her own bombshell: she claimed Trump wants to make her the 'number three' at the DOJ,” the Daily Mail’s report reads.
“It is unclear what that means, since the associate attorney general role, under attorney general and deputy attorney general, is currently occupied by Stanley Woodward Jr.”
Since her departure from the DOJ earlier this year, Halligan reportedly became the target of an investigation by Florida’s bar association over accusations levied against her from the nonprofit organization Campaign for Accountability involving reprimands she’d received from judges. The investigation could ultimately lead to her disbarment, though The New York Times reported that the Trump administration hinted it may seek to intervene in the state bar associations' disciplinary proceedings.
