Lock him up? Mike Pence now wants his own emails blocked from public access

Hillary Clinton was repeatedly hammered during the 2016 presidential campaign over her decision to use a private email server during her time as Secretary of State, as critics claimed she was trying to avoid FOIA requests.

However, it now seems that vice president elect Mike Pence is now similarly trying to block the public from seeing the contents of his own emails, the Indy Star reports.

According to the publication, Pence's Indiana gubernatorial administration is "fighting to conceal the contents of an email sent to Gov. Mike Pence by a political ally" that is "being sought by a prominent Democratic labor lawyer who says he wants to expose waste in the Republican administration."

Pence's administration is specifically trying to conceal a political "white paper" that was sent to the Indiana governor, and that his attorneys argue is not covered by Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act. Earlier this year, Marion Superior Court ruled that the redactions made to the paper that shielded key information from public review should not be overturned by a court, which government transparency experts say sets a worrisome precedent.

"It comes down to this — the court is giving up its ability to check another branch of government, and that should worry people," Gerry Lanosga, an Indiana University media professor, tells the Indy Star.
