Longtime GOP operative says Trump and his staff's 'soul must be sick' while his base rallies around immigration policy

The House Republicans sent a strongly worded letter to President Donald Trump to express their concern about the horrifying scene at the US/Mexican boarder. The House GOP had an opportunity to confront Trump during the caucus meeting Tuesday, but didn't.

It only added to the problem that former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski mocked a 10-year-old girl with Downs Syndrome, who was taken from her mother at the border.

Peter Wehner, who has worked in the past three Republican administrations, was disgusted with Lewandowski's behavior.

"It was a sickening moment from a person who in his soul must be sick," he said. "It's extraordinary. It just goes to show that with Trump and his henchman there's really no bottom. There's nothing they won't say, nothing they won't do, no dehumanizing tactic they won't reach for. When you begin to mock 10-year-old kids with disabilities, I'm not sure what the next stage is."

He went on to say that it is clearly a window into the soul "or lack of a soul" of those in the administration who have worked to enact this policy.

"We have a person as president who is a deeply damaged and disordered personality," he continued. "And it's not just him. It's the people who surround him, and it's really troubling. And even more troubling is that he's got a base that seems not only to ignore it but to rally around it. So, it's an ugly and disturbing picture all the way around."
