'Outrageous' and 'obscene': MAGA outrage erupts over John Eastman ruling

Outrage erupted among the MAGA right Thursday after a California judge ruled attorney John Eastman should face disbarment for assisting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stood front and center before a chorus of angry right-wingers who argued Eastman’s efforts — dubbed “worse than Watergate” by one legal expert — did not constitute, as Judge Yvette D. Roland ruled, unethical misconduct.

“Outrageous,” Greene said in an interview with the right-wing outlet Real America’s Voices. “He's one of the best attorneys in the United States, perhaps in history.”

The complaint lodged against Eastman by the States United Democracy Center argued the attorney filed frivolous claims, spread false information and help rile the “Stop the Steal” rally attendees who would ultimately storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Roland found Eastman culpable of 10 of the 11 disciplinary charges levied against him in a lengthy and damning decision that will be sent to the California Supreme Court for a final verdict.

“His wrongdoing is substantially aggravated by his multiple offenses, lack of candor and indifference,” wrote Roland. “Given the serious and extensive nature of Eastman’s unethical actions, the most severe available professional sanction is warranted to protect the public and preserve the public confidence in the legal system.”

Former President Donald Trump’s supporters took to X to disagree.

“He is a very serious attorney,” former Supreme Court clerk Mike Davis told Steve Bannon. “It is obscene that they are disbarring John Eastman for zealously representing his client."

“When President Trump is back in the White House … his Justice department must open a criminal probe.”

Mark Mendlovitz, whose X profile includes the message “Leftism is a cult,” argued the Eastman ruling was the product of a kangaroo court, or one that ignores the standards of law.

“John Eastman, who was ruled to be disbarred on Wednesday by California kangaroo court judge Yvette Roland, is yet another (temporary) casualty of lawfare by a fascist Left that will stop at nothing to try to punish everyone involved with President Trump,” he wrote.

“I predict this outrageous overreach against one of America's sharpest legal minds will eventually be overturned at a higher level and set a precedent that will come back to bite the Trump-deranged Left.”

Mendlovitz’ prediction was not the only one to hit social media when the Eastman ruling became national news.

“You will see MAGA crazies calling this lawfare against conservative lawyers but it's not,” wrote Daily Beast reporter Barry Markson.
"Eastman's actions were egregious and performed in his capacity as Trump's lawyer. Eastman showed no contrition or acknowledgment of his wrongdoing. This is exactly what happens to lawyers who grossly violate ethical rules.”
