Majority of Americans want to completely replace Congress: poll

Results of a poll released Tuesday show that as summer turns to fall, the majority of Americans are longing to totally clean house (of Representatives).

And Senate.

Today's NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed that 54 percent of Americans would vote out every single member of Congress, including their own, if given the chance.

One thousand voting-age adults were surveyed between August 27 and 31.

The same question has been asked on the polls for about 18 months and this is the highest percentage of people who have ever said they would wipe the congressional slate clean if they could.

In the same poll, 82 percent of respondents said that they disapproved of how members of Congress were doing their jobs — also a historical high.

The trend of dissatisfaction with lawmakers has held steady throughout the year. In late July, anger at the government hit a 20-year high in one poll. In August, a New York Times poll recorded 82 percent dissatisfaction with Congress.

Robert Blendon, a public opinion and polling expert at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, told Raw Story in August that anti-incumbent sentiment was surging.

"It's clear that there is an anger out there and that all the voters can do is vote against incumbents," Blendon said. "The one thing they can do is throw people out, and they'll ultimately have to decide which party they hold responsible. It could be different this time, but it's historically the president's party."
