Man spent three months in jail for trying to buy breakfast while black

In yet another case of a black man being brutally punished after doing nothing wrong, Emory Ellis was hauled to jail when he tried to buy breakfast at a Burger King.

On a November morning in 2015, Ellis, who was homeless at the time, went to a Boston Burger King to buy a meal, the Associated Press reports. Suspecting Ellis of using fake cash, the cashier called police. Ellis was arrested. Because he'd been on probation, he ended up spending three months in jail.

In a lawsuit against Burger King, his lawyer, Justin Drechsler, claimed that the cashier discriminated against Ellis based on his appearance.

"A person like me would've gotten an apology, but a person like Emory somehow finds his way in handcuffs for trying to pay for his breakfast with real money," Drechsler said. Ellis never got his money back, but he is suing the company for nearly 1 million dollars.
