'Quite consequential': Elections expert highlights 'most important court hearing to watch'

Next week there will be a major court hearing to watch, democracy Docket leader Marc Elias said over the weekend.

Democratic elections attorney Elias has previously commented on cases in which President Donald Trump or the Republican Party have sought to change election rules, such as when Trump's campaign was said to have suffered a major loss in its attempt to disqualify mail-in ballots in a swing state.

On Saturday, however, Elias took to BlueSky to highlight a different case.

"ATTN: This is the most important court hearing to watch next week," he wrote. "The GOP does not want this case in federal court because they know a federal judge is not likely to toss out 60,000 lawful votes."

He added, "Their plan is to have the partisan NC state Supreme Court decide."

Elias linked to a Democracy Docket article called, "4th Circuit To Weigh Whether NC Supreme Court Election Challenge Should Proceed in State or Federal Court."

"The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hold oral argument Monday to weigh whether GOP North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin’s legal bid contesting his 2024 election loss to incumbent Democratic Justice Allison Riggs should proceed in state or federal court," according to the article. "Although Monday’s argument won’t center on the merits of Griffin’s challenge to over 60,000 ballots, it will have bearing on the venue in which the dispute plays out — a factor that could prove quite consequential for the ultimate outcome of the ongoing legal battle."
