Marco Rubio: Legalized gay marriage is 'a real and present danger' to the survival of Christianity

Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio suggested in a recent interview that the push to legalize same-sex marriage represented a threat to the survival of Christianity.

In a profile published on Tuesday, CBN's David Brody pointed out that Rubio's "deep faith drives public policy on social issues like traditional marriage."

"If you think about it, we are at the water's edge of the argument that mainstream Christian teaching is hate speech," Rubio explained to Brody. "Because today we've reached the point in our society where if you do not support same-sex marriage you are labeled a homophobe and a hater."

"So what's the next step after that?" the Florida senator continued. "After they are done going after individuals, the next step is to argue that the teachings of mainstream Christianity, the catechism of the Catholic Church is hate speech."

"And there's a real and present danger."

But when it came to his own personal life, Rubio said that he realized how precious his family was when he saw his son drowning.

"I walk outside and I turn to the left and Dominick is floating at the top face down," he recalled. "And you can just imagine how horrifying that was. And so I jumped in, I pulled him out. He immediately started crying. Obviously, he threw up all the water he had swallowed and everything was fine."

"One day I will no longer be in politics, one day I will no longer be a senator or anything else. But I will always be a father and I will always be a husband," Rubio noted.

As for the presidential election, Rubio said that it was up to God -- and the voters.

"My view is you go out and do the very best you can and ultimately it's going to turn out the way voters and God decide," he declared.
