Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) proclaimed during a hearing on Tuesday that federal government workers do not hold "real jobs," while disparaging the surging protests against tech billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency task force as it purges tens of thousands of people from the civil service.
"You can protest all you want outside of departments of this government, you can protest all you want, but the American people disagree with you," said Greene. "You're protecting the bureaucracy. The bureaucracy is not a business. Those are not real jobs producing federal revenue, by the way. They're consuming taxpayer dollars. Those jobs are paid for by the American tax people, who work real jobs, earn real income, pay federal taxes, and then pay these federal employees. Federal employees do not deserve their jobs. Federal employees do not deserve their paychecks. And these are jobs that can be fired at will."

Federal employees pay federal taxes and provide critical services, some of which the private sector couldn't function without.
Greene's comments provoked a retort from Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), who was quick to remind her that the people she attacked included thousands of her own constituents.
"Marjorie Taylor Greene believes 6,008 of her constituents are unworthy of a job or a paycheck because they work for the federal government," wrote Escobar on X. "To quote her favorite person: SAD!"
Greene's attack on government employees comes as she faces scrutiny for purchasing stock in Musk's flagship electric car business while sitting on a key committee reviewing the work of DOGE.
