Markeis McGlockton's killer charged with manslaughter in controversial Florida ‘stand your ground’ case

On Monday, the Florida State's Attorney's office announced that they were charging Michael Drejka, 47, with manslaughter in the shooting death of 28-year-old Markeis McGlockton.

On July 19, Drejka got in a fight with McGlockton's girlfriend over a parking spot. When McGlockton intervened and knocked Drejka to the ground, Drejka shot him dead.Markeis McGlockton's killer charged with manslaughter in controversial Florida ‘stand your ground’ case

Drejka had previously evaded arrest thanks to Florida's 'Stand your ground' law, which decrees that a shooter who feels threatened has immunity from prosecution.

Even before the Attorney's office made their announcement, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri raised questions about whether McGlockton's death was a justifiable homicide.

“Before Stand Your Ground, a case like this probably would have a different outcome. As you can see in there, there is a pause, even if it’s only for a couple seconds, there is a pause between the time Drejka hits the ground and he shoots. That pause gives me pause. That pause gives me some concern… but I don’t get to, and we don’t get to substitute our judgment for Drejka’s judgment,” Sheriff Gualtieri said.

Critics of Stand your ground laws, including McGlockton's family, point out that the law is administered in a racist manner.

A warrant was issued for Drejka's arrest Monday.
