U.S. senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) came under fire on Saturday for what some deemed a "misleading" social media post falsely claiming to be working over the weekend with Donald Trump, who was reportedly golfing at the time.
GOP lawmaker Mullin on Saturday took to social media to post photos of himself in the Oval Office with Trump. He claimed to be "working through the weekend" with the president, despite Trump being at another location.
"Working through the weekend with President Donald J. Trump. It’s always an honor to be in the Oval Office— I never take this opportunity to serve Oklahoma for granted," Mullin wrote.
Mullin's followers were quick to draw conclusions about the apparent conflict, with one user writing, "We all saw him land in Palm Beach last night. Are you drunk or just a liar?"
One popular liberal influencer, Scary Larry, pointed out, "Trump was golfing at Mar-a-Lardo when inbred dips--- Markwayne Mullin tweeted this. So either: 1) trump uses his magical Mango Messiah power to be in two places at once, or… 2) Markwayne Mullin is a filthy f------ dogs--- liar who thinks his constituents are as dumb as he is."
Former government official Marisel Morales chimed in, "They ALL lie. Trump was at his golf club in Palm Beach when Markwayne the Plumber posted this."
The moment was flagged by Patriot Takes, which is "dedicated research monitoring and exposing right-wing extremism and other threats to democracy." The group wrote, "Trump was at his golf club in Palm Beach when this was posted."
Political scientist Norman Ornstein said, "MarkWayne has found his true calling: caddy to Donald Trump."
A self-identified MAGA user asked Mullin, "But the White House posted him leaving to Mar a Lago last night ... is this today?"
The lawmaker replied that the "[meeting] was last night."
"Senate is in DC today working though shutdown," he added in response.
Journalist Aaron Parnas flagged the criticisms in his own report.
"Republican Senator called out for misleading social media post suggesting that Trump and Senators were working this weekend. Donald Trump is not currently in Washington, D.C.," Parnas wrote. "He is currently at his golf club in Florida."
