Maryland’s GOP governor shoots down call for criminal investigation into Brett Kavanaugh sex assault allegations

Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) on Friday rebuffed calls for a state investigation into allegations that Judge Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted and attempted to rape Christine Blasey Ford at a high school party, the Baltimore Sunreports.

Democratic state Sen. Cheryl Kagan had sent a letter to the governor urging an investigation after the White House refused to ask the FBI to investigate.

“Since you know the importance of an independent investigation, you must step up where members of your party on Capitol Hill fell down, and direct the Maryland State Police to initiate an investigation into Professor Ford’s allegations,” Sen. Kagan wrote.

But Maryland's Republican governor shot down the idea.

“The Maryland State Police will not be getting involved in this,” Hogan said, without offering a justification.

Kavanaugh, nominated by President Donald Trump to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, has faced an increasingly difficult nomination process since the allegations became public.

Governor Hogan is running for reelection in November, hoping to become the first Republican governor of Maryland to win a second term in over six decades.

Hogan is being challenged by Democrat Ben Jealous.
