Massachusetts man charged with hate crime for holding gay friend captive and beating him for days

A Massachusetts man has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after he allegedly held a gay man captive and beat him for days.

Police said 19-year-old Jackson Sugrue, of Framingham, held 50-year-old Otoni Eliseu captive in his own basement apartment for four days without food or water, reported WFXT-TV.

Officers responded Saturday afternoon to a report about a man being beaten by a baseball bat, and police found Eliseu shirtless and lying battered and bloody on the ground.

Eliseu said his younger acquaintance became violent while they were smoking crack in his apartment in the basement of the Philadelphia Baptist Church, where he had been staying with the pastor's permission.

Investigators said Sugrue pulled Eliseu from his bed and threw him onto the floor, where he stepped on his throat and choked him.

"He attacked me on my back, on my butt, [saying,] 'You’re gay, you like me,'" Eliseu said.

Prosecutors filed a hate crime charge because Eliseu said his assailant used anti-gay slurs and attacked him for being gay.

Eliseu said Sugrue beat him with a table and a fire extinguisher, and kept him locked in his own bathroom for four days, when he finally managed to escape.

Police arrested Sugrue later Saturday at his home, and he was charged with a hate crime, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and intimidation of a witness.
