Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently became the first university to reject and condemn Trump's dubious deal to nine universities, causing one GOP lawmaker to celebrate.
Raw Story reported on the MIT's initial statement saying it cannot support the Trump admin's plan.
"In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education," MIT President Sally Kornbluth wrote in a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon and White House officials.
This led U.S. Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY) to celebrate the university's move on X.
"The surest way to screw up the world’s best technical school is to let feds tell them how to run it," Massie wrote. "Congrats to my alma mater for turning down a bribe to let the executive branch dictate what happens on its campus."
He further added, "A lot of things are wrong in, but MIT is not one of them."
A social media user told the GOP lawmaker, "So you want MIT to continue prioritizing foreign students over US citizens, accepting foreign bribes, and letting men lurk in women’s bathrooms," to which Massie replied, "To be the best science and technical school in the world, you have to accept the smartest people in the world. Not all of them are born in the United States."
Another user wrote, "You advocate for more woke idiocy and discriminatory admissions practices against Americans? I'm generally a supporter of your positions, but this seems an 'America last' one, Thomas," and Massie replied, "MIT doesn’t accept woke idiots, because they don’t accept idiots."
"Their admissions process is the closest thing you’ll find to a meritocracy on an American campus," he also added. "Foreigners they do accept are in the upper 1% of IQ or accomplishment. If only our immigration system were similar!
