'Elder abuse' accusations fly as McConnell goes MIA when he was expected back in Senate
Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s failure to show up at the Senate building on Monday raised more concerns that his aides are hiding something.
There had been hopes that the Kentucky Republican, who has been missing in action for more than three months due to health issues, would make an appearance on Monday with just one week to go before the chamber adjourned, but his aides are pointedly remaining mum.
According to Puck’s Marianna Sotomayor, appearing on MS NOW, “Even in the last several days, so many reporters asking his office saying, ‘Should we expect him to show up today?’ And his office just pointing to past statements that they released, which the latest one essentially said that he is going through rehab and back at home like he has been released from the hospital and other more like health facilities that he had been at. So that still doesn't tell us much of anything.”
After she pointed out that his absence is creating major issues for his caucus, conservative commentator Charlie Sykes admitted he has new concerns.
“Well, I think today will be a decisive day. It really ought to be,” he told host Alicia Menendez. “Look, I mean, this is what you get when you have a geriatric Congress. And obviously, you know, we need to have a lot more transparency.”
“But let's look at this on a human level, because it almost feels not just as an abuse of the Senate, but it feels like elder abuse,” he added. “If this was your father or your grandfather who was going through this, wouldn't the compassionate thing to do would be to say, step aside, step down, take your laurels, resign?”
“The U.S. Senate should not be god's waiting room,” he added. “It should be a deliberative body. And at this point, you know, again, I think it's outrageous that the people of Kentucky don't have representation.”
