Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of declaring a national emergency to fund the border wall he promised voters that Mexico would pay for, reports the Washington Post.
According to the report, McConnell met with Trump privately at the White House on Tuesday and warned that "the move could trigger political blowback and divide the GOP."
"At least a half-dozen Republican senators are fiercely opposed to the idea of an emergency declaration, generating enough opposition that a disapproval resolution could pass the Senate," the report says.
Another member of the GOP's Senate leadership team told Republican senators that they should go to the White House to express their opposition to the possibility of an emergency declaration according to the Post.
McConnell has become one of Trump's closest advisers on how rank-and-file Republicans on Capitol Hill will react to his moves, the Post says.
