A video captured an older white man yelling racial slurs at a group of teenage boys who were skating in a corporate building parking lot in San Pedro, California, reported Fox 11 news.
The man came out of his rented office space, and told the group of boys to stop skating in the area. However, the boys claim that they skate there every Wednesday, so they saw no reason to leave.
The white man then begins to scream at one of the boys by saying that he has "authority" over him. At this point he starts to yell racial slurs.
“You Mexican piece of sh*t," the man said.
“And you’re just a piece of sh*t," the young boy responds.
“I’m a racist, at least I’m something!” the man yells back. “All you are is a little coward!”
The video was posted on Facebook by Willie Galaz, a father to one of the boy's in the group.
“There was another way he could’ve come up to the kids and told them to leave,” Galaz said.
Galaz said the man reacted the way he did to the kids because of their race.
“What gave me the strength to post the video was the kid who was keeping his composure in that situation where he had a grown man yelling in his face,” Galaz said. “I guess he just looked around and was looking at the kid and started to judge the kid because he was Mexican, and I guess that’s the only thing he had at that time to put him down."
The incident inspired Galaz to create a safe space for street skaters. He started an online fundraising campaign to help gain support for an event geared towards giving teens a place to skate without having to worry about being harassed.
