MI teen makes up drive-by shooting claim after accidentally shooting younger brother

A Michigan teen accidentally shot his younger brother and then falsely claimed the boy had been wounded in a drive-by shooting, police said.

Officers said the 14-year-old was handling the firearm with his 12-year-old about 1 a.m. in the basement of their Grand Rapids home when the gun discharged, reported the Grand Rapids Press.

A bullet fragment struck the younger boy’s jaw, police said, and the older teen decided to call 911 and made up the drive-by tale.

The boys’ parents were not home at the time, investigators said.

The 12-year-old was hospitalized after the shooting, but injuries were not life-threatening.

The older boy was taken to a juvenile detention center on charges of discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling, false report of a felony, and receiving and concealing a stolen firearm.

Police said the gun had been stolen from Wyoming in 2010, but the did not say how the boy gained access to it.
