President Donald Trump's endorsement of Amir Hassan for Michigan's 8th Congressional District triggered outrage among his Truth Social followers.
"From bravely fighting for our incredible U.S. Navy, to protecting his Community as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, Amir has served our Nation with distinction, and will bring that same Fighting Spirit to the U.S. Congress," Trump wrote.
Despite Hassan's campaign literature stating "Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior," Trump supporters attacked the endorsement based on Hassan's perceived Muslim faith.
Followers flooded the post with religious objections.
Truth Social user Conita Drew wrote a 542-word response, "Have you lost your mind, endorsing Muslim candidates?" they began, and added, "You are not the man that I voted for three times."
User JoniMarieForLiberty warned Trump, "YOU ARE BEING MISLED, President Trump! This guy is a snake in the grass. Muslim and never voted for a republican in his whole life. Moved to Michigan last summer and immediately filed to run for office. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!"
The backlash reveals deep religious divisions within Trump's base regarding candidate eligibility based on faith.
