There are plenty of racist high-school bros out there, but most of them are smart enough to not post videos of themselves talking about reinstating slavery on social media. This was not the case for three male students at Grosse Point South High School in Michigan, who over the weekend posted a video on social media where they "joked" about how much fun it would be to bring back slavery and to brand black people so they could claim them as their property.
Grosse Point senior Melba Dearing, who is black, tells The Detroit Free Press that she's disappointed that people in her community are still talking this way about minorities.
"One of the answers was they should send black people back to Africa," she said. "And they said the only states where African Americans could go would be Maine and North Dakota and … Idaho, but then one said, 'Oh no, I like Idaho potatoes. Don't say that.' They looked like they were drunk, but that's no excuse."
Grosse Point Principal Moussa Hamka sent out an email to students and parents on Wednesday condemning the video, which has sparked outrage in the community.
"Immediately after being made aware of the situation, South administration began contacting students and families (and) making appropriate decisions regarding consequences for those involved, including student separations from school," she said.
