'He just plum forgot': Mike Johnson slammed for border bill bait-and-switch
February 16, 2024
Speaker Mike Johnson was lambasted Friday by a columnist who argued he’s either a saboteur or cognitively challenged.
“If Johnson has not taken leave of his mental faculties, the alternative is worse,” writes Dana Milbank. “He is deliberately and knowingly sabotaging the functioning of the U.S. government because he thinks it's in his interest.”
Milbank is critiquing Johnson’s own words regarding special counsel Robert Hur's report on Joe Biden that was supposed to be about classified documents, but evolved into a debate about the president’s mental health.
Johnson argued the report showed Biden was unfit for the position of power the president holds.
Milbank disagreed.
“If there is anybody in public life whose actions scream out for the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, it is Johnson,” the columnist wrote.
Milbank points to lapses that include mixing up Israel and Iran during a “Meet the Press” appearance and a statement issued Monday about foreign aid legislation.

In his statement, Johnson said, “House Republicans were crystal clear from the very beginning of discussions that any so-called national security supplemental legislation must recognize that national security begins at our own border."
But this is when Milbank reminds readers Johnson killed a bipartisan border security bill and contradicted himself on the role the White House should play.
“He had earlier said that congressional action was indispensable but now claimed Biden already had 'all the tools and the executive authority necessary' without legislation,” writes Milbank.
“Apparently, he just plum forgot.”
