Vulnerable Republican drowned in boos as he downplays Medicaid 'concerns': video

A vulnerable House Republican in a New York swing district was met with anger and heckling when he met with a crowd of roughly 3,000 constituents for the "Rally in the Valley" at Clover Stadium in Rockland County, according to a report.

Constituents expressed fury over his vote to ratify a GOP budget resolution that directs "savings" that ostensibly have to come out of hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid, Lohud reported Friday.

Lawler, who represents a portion of upstate New York north of New York City, tried to downplay the idea there would be significant cuts to the program while defending his vote to move forward.

But gathered voters didn't buy his downplay.

"I understand the concern about Medicaid," said Lawler. "I understand that everyone here relies on these critical programs and services."

However, he continued as shouting and boos started to drown him out, "the government has $36 trillion in debt and a $7 trillion budge ... the objective is to make sure that within the system, that we will eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse."

This marks the latest in a series of House GOP lawmaker meetings with constituents where they found themselves struggling to explain controversial Trump administration and Republican policies to a furious crowd. Many of these confrontations are occurring in safely Republican-favoring districts, with members like Reps. Rich McCormick (R-GA) and Keith Self (R-TX) finding themselves under fire.

Faced with the onslaught, many Republicans have accused Democratic special interests of planting protesters, and the chief of the House GOP's campaign arm has advised members to stop holding town halls for the time being. When this leaked to the public, Democratic lawmakers seized on the move, accusing them of being afraid to talk to their own constituents, and some Democrats even vowing to hold their own town halls in districts whose GOP members have stopped showing up.
