MAGA darling in swing district gets ominous polling news

Rep. Mike Lawler is trailing Democratic challenger Cait Conley in New York's competitive 17th District, according to a new Emerson College Polling/PIX11 News survey that shows the Republican incumbent's standing eroding on multiple fronts since 2024.

The poll found Conley leading Lawler 48 percent to 46 percent, with 7 percent still undecided. Emerson College Polling executive director Spencer Kimball noted a meaningful shift in crossover support compared to the last cycle.

Lawler's overall favorability has also slipped since October 2024, dropping from 52 percent to 45 percent favorable while his unfavorable rating climbed from 42 percent to 46 percent. Conley, by comparison, holds a 44 percent favorable to 35 percent unfavorable split, with a sizable 22 percent of voters still neutral toward her.

Despite holding a swing district that former Vice President Kamala Harris carried in 2024, Lawler has been a darling of the Trump movement for years, often going on cable news to defend Trump's policies. Despite this, some previous reports indicated that a few senior House Democrats were skeptical Lawler could be defeated — a sentiment not shared by the broader Democratic campaign apparatus, which has dumped large amounts of money into the race.

Enthusiasm levels may matter too: voters describing themselves as "very excited" about voting in November favor Conley by seven points, while those only "somewhat excited" break for Lawler by a wider 12-point margin, 52 percent to 40 percent.

The survey also captured a dramatic shift in what's worrying district voters most. Concerns over "threats to democracy" more than doubled since 2024, jumping from 10 percent to 23 percent and landing as the second-biggest issue behind the economy at 31 percent. Immigration concerns, meanwhile, fell from 20 percent to just 13 percent.

On foreign policy, a majority of NY-17 voters, 52 percent, disapprove of U.S. military action in Iran, compared to 37 percent who support it. The issue splits sharply along party lines, with Democrats opposing the war 83 percent to 10 percent and Republicans backing it 69 percent to 15 percent, while independents are evenly divided at 44 percent apiece.

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul's standing in the district has improved since 2024, even as she remains net negative overall, with her approval rising from 26 percent to 40 percent while 49 percent still disapprove of her performance.

The poll surveyed 400 likely NY-17 voters from September 27-29, with a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
