Former Vice President Mike Pence was among the Republicans that raced to microphones to comment on the U.S. Supreme Court bringing down affirmative action in higher education.
Speaking to MSNBC, Pence said, “There may have been a time, 50 years ago, when we needed to affirmatively take steps to correct long-term racial bias in institutions of higher education. But I can tell you, as the father of three college graduates, those days are long over."
Pence's children are all white. Two, however, are women. According to the numbers, white women have benefitted the most from affirmative action.
Former CBS Early Show host Rene Syler keyed in on the fact that Pence cited his three adult children. "Were his 3 college grads BLACK?" she commented.
The New Republic headlined the Pence statement calling it "incredibly dumb."
Filmmaker Andy Ostroy asked Pence how he feels about legacy admissions to higher education. He said that such admissions "give an unjust edge to wealthy, connected white kids? Should we end that too? I'll be waiting." He translated Pence's follow up comment as: "Woah now, didn't mean for too many of y'all to go to college — let's calm it down now."
Legal analyst Allison Gill said that the language coming from conservatives claiming "racism is over" reminds her "of Texas saying they'll simply end rape after the fall of Roe."
Other activists pointed to Pence explaining that if it's not happening to him doesn't mean it isn't happening.
