Military museum founder John Valluzzo dead after police shooting at his mansion

Police said on Sunday that a man killed during an armed confrontation on May 24 was the founder of a military museum in Connecticut.

The Associated Press reported on Monday that authorities identified the man as 75-year-old John Valluzzo, who was also the president of the Military Museum of New England in Danbury, Connecticut.

Connecticut state police said officers were called to Valluzzo's home in Ridgefield, Connecticut Friday afternoon to respond to a domestic dispute. Valluzzo allegedly refused to obey officers' orders to put down his handgun, and instead raised it toward them, prompting them to shoot him.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that authorities did not describe the nature of the dispute that was going on before the shooting, and that Valluzzo died later that evening at a hospital in Dansbury.

Valluzzo, who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war, opened the museum in Danbury in 1995. The facility released a short statement addressing his death on its' website.

"Sorrow fills our hearts at this sad moment," the statement said. "A sorrow that is deep and personal for all of us. The news of the untimely death of John Valluzzo comes as a great shock to all who knew him. His departure was sudden, unexpected and particularly distressing."

A nearby resident, who described the area as "the boondocks of Richfield" to WVIT-TV, expressed his surprise at the incident.

"It can happen anywhere," he told the station on Sunday. "In this day and age, you're never far away from anything."
